The Pluim Group History

The Pluim Group was commenced in 1946 by Bill Pluim after immigrating out of Europe after World War II, Bill Pluim established the company not long after arriving in Australia to live. After visiting Australia as a sailor in the Dutch Navy during the war.

Along with 2 partners Hank Brendel and Wim DeJong. he commenced building on the Central Coast. Sixty years on that business - Pluim Group - is one of the State's most long running commercial and industrial building contractors.

During the late 40's and early 50's the company built many homes on the Central Coast.

In 1954 the company was re-named Pluim Constructions after Bill Pluim bought out his partners.

Shops and offices in Gosford, Terrigal and the Entrance were Pluim Constructions first projects but the company soon began looking at bigger commercial contracts, including schools and TAFE Colleges.

Graham Allen joined the company in 1958 as an apprentice. His father Perc Allen was the company's accountant and his mother Wyn ran the office for 35 years after her husband pasted away. The first project that Graham can remember in the main street of Gosford was the Pott’s building in Railway Crescent, where cement was in short supply and had to be carted in toilet pans. After working alongside Bill Pluim for so long Graham Allen purchased the company from Bill in 1978 as Bill retired from the day to day operations.

Mr Allen says the secret of Pluims success has always been the quality of its employees, “long term employees are the backbone of this business”. An example was Keith Murray a foreman who worked for 42 years; Barry Payne a truck driver and plant operator was employed for over 40 years.

Pluim’s office was originally administered by Graham Allen’s mother Mrs Win Allen who worked in the office for 35 years.

Vicki Perich (ne Alexander) who commenced over 25 years ago continues the main administration management of the office today.

Scott Allen, Graham Allen’s son commenced with the company 15 years ago. Scott became managing director in 2010 and is focused on continuing the Pluim Groups valued customer relationships.

Sub contract relationships have also given an edge on competitors. John Cleary with his sons, is the forth generation that has worked for Pluim’s. Dick Powe – Prime Ceilings from Pluim’s original Gosford Fibrous Plasterworks is still working with Pluim’s 50 years on. Paul Dixon Painters have also now had three generations work for the Pluim Group.
